UN General Assembly Week

The High-Level General Debate of the 74rd UN General Assembly will take place from 24th - 30th September 2019 in New York, USA. 

  • On Monday 23 September, the first one-day UN High-Level Meeting on Universal health coverage (UHC): Moving together to build a healthier world will be held.
  • On the afternoon of Tuesday, 24 September and all day on 25 September, UNGA will convene a meeting of the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF).
  • On Thursday, 26 September, the UNGA will hold a high-level dialogue on financing for development (FfD), and also a high-level meeting on the elimination of nuclear weapons.

This briefing paper aims to inform Member States about the crucial opportunity of the 2019 UN High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage (UHC HLM) and the need to ensure that the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) is included as an element of UHC in the outcome document of the UN HLM. These priorities complement the asks outlined by UHC2030.

This policy brief [11] is an update to the NCD Alliance’s 2014 brief UHC and NCDs: A mutually reinforcing agenda, and reflects the developments in both the NCD response and UHC agenda since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SDGs. It makes the case for including NCDs in national UHC benefit packages in order to fully achieve the 2030 Agenda target of healthy lives and well-being for all at all ages.
