Update on Universal Health Coverage indicator

In February, the Inter-Agency Expert Group – SDGs (IAEG-SDGs) revised one of two indicators for UHC that was meant to measure financial protection. The new indicator not only no longer measures this, but is not universally agreed upon nor policy-neutral. 
 
The financial protection indicator was replaced by “number of people covered by health insurance or a public health system”. This indicator does not measure financial protection and could delay our shared goal of achieving health for all.
 
UHC advocates around the world are working with government statisticians to urge the IAEG-SDGs to revert to the previous indicator.
