Since 2014, the government has implemented strategic action plans to prevent, diagnose, and manage NCDs, with a strong focus on integrating services into its decentralized health system.

Despite ongoing challenges—such as workforce capacity, financing gaps, and access to essential medical supplies—Ethiopia is making significant strides in expanding NCD care, especially at the primary healthcare level and in rural areas. This case study explores the country’s efforts, lessons learned, and the critical next steps toward achieving the global target of reducing premature NCD mortality by one-third by 2030.
